Keeping Up With The Kardashians celebrated it's 10 year anniversary last year and after a decade of watching this family on our screens, we can honestly say they are never short of drama. Kris Jenner revealed in her autobiography, "Every time we renewed for another season. I would think to myself, ‘How can I take these fifteen minutes of fame and turn them into thirty?'"
Their multi-million dollar empire is built around family feuding, relationship drama, sibling rivalry and first world problems — all on public display for the world to see. Kris said, "I started to look at our careers like pieces on a chessboard. It was very calculated. My business decisions and strategies were very intentional, definite and planned to the nth degree." But, unfortunately for them, private diary entries, former nannies, childhood friends and even close family members have come forward with surprising details about what it's really like to grow up as a Kardashian.
21 They Were All "Groomed" For Fame From A Very Young Age
It's no big secret that the Kardashian family had always set their sights on fame and with a mother like Kris Jenner what else would you expect? But only recently their former nanny, Pam Behan, revealed in her tell-all book Malibu Nanny: The True Adventures of the Former Kardashian Nanny that the children were "groomed" to be famous from a very young age.
The nanny writes in the memoir, "Kourtney, Kim, Khloe, and Robert spent time with friends whose parents were celebrities or people in the limelight. I believe (Kris) was grooming her children for their current celebrity status their entire lives."
"I do believe that the success they enjoy now is what she always hoped for and wanted for them and for herself." Kris certainly got her wish now that all her children are now household names.
20 Kris Treated Kim Worse Than Her Other Siblings
Robert Kardashian's ex-wife, Ellen Kardashian, released a handwritten diary she claimed was penned by her later husband. One of the most shocking entries was in 1989, he allegedly wrote, "Kris was [scolding] (Kim) and said she was going to (hurt) her! Kim was hysterical." It's shocking that the mother and daughter who appear so close that this was going on behind closed doors.
The Kardashian family dismissed the diaries were legit and even called their stepmother "trash" but Ellen has stuck by their authenticity. She told In Touch magazine, "These are authentic handwritten journals I have shared, that my late husband Robert Kardashian so carefully wrote during 1989 and 1990 at a most trying and touching time of his life. They are my personal possessions and he left them to me on his passing."
19 Bruce Loved Dressing As A Playboy Bunny
Following his divorce from his wife, Chrystie Crownover, former Olympian Bruce Jenner became a regular at the Playboy Mansion. Decades before he transitioned as a woman and became known as Caitlyn, he would dress up just like the Playboy bunnies at parties. A former mansion regular told Page Six,
"Bruce became like one of the Bunnies. He’d be like one of the girls and all dressed up - makeup, hosiery, high heels, the whole nine yards. I thought he was just being funny."
Now as Caitlyn, she looks back on her time as Bruce with not very positive feelings. In her memoir, she writes, "(Bruce was) a well-meaning but slightly doddering patriarch who has no life of his own and is subsumed by the women who surround him."
18 Kris Would Go On An Expletive Rant At The Nannies For The Slightest Thing
According to Pam Behan in her memoir Malibu Nanny: The True Adventures of the Former Kardashian Nanny, Kris was verbally harsh with the staff in the house. She writes, "When I got home, Kris, who was in the kitchen, looked at the groceries I had just purchased, and let out a torrent of expletives. ‘$#&%! $#&%! $#&%! I can’t believe you forgot the $#&%ing broccoli!"
We knew Kris was highly strung but there's no excuse for this behavior. The former nanny added, "Broccoli was not on the short list she had given me that day, although it was a regular item on the weekly list. I did not know, shame on me, that keeping broccoli stocked in the refrigerator was so critical." The Kardashians have their own team of nannies now but hopefully, they aren't this nasty to them.
17 Khloe Was Bullied At School - Even By Her Teachers
Former "ugly duckling" Khloe had it rough during her high school years. She wasn't as "skinny" as her sisters and she towered above them following a growth spurt when she was young, which led to constant comments about her physical appearance. The Strong Looks Better Naked author recalled about one teacher in particular,
"(She) never said I was fat, but I knew she was referring to my size. Words are the weapon we have: they cut the deepest."
She added, "Having someone in your class call you fat, ugly, too tall and so on, you start to think all those things about yourself. And if you're like me, those words are played on repeat inside your head."
Now she's expecting her first daughter with boyfriend Tristan Thompson, she will no doubt teach her child how to stand up to the bullies.
16 Kourtney Turned Against Bruce And Would Scream, "You're Not My Dad!"
In 2003, Robert Kardashian was diagnosed with esophageal cancer, and just eight weeks later he passed away at the age of 59. The family was devastated, but Kourtney took things the worse and even turned against her stepfather, Bruce. A former nanny told New York Daily News, "Bruce tried to engage with Kourtney and to parent her as a good stepfather would. Kourtney wanted nothing to do with it."
She added, "Bruce tried to talk to her, and she yelled, "You’re not my dad! Don’t even speak to me!"' It was also revealed on an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashiansthat Kourtney is still angry with her mother for having an affair with Bruce when she was married to their father. Clearly, Kourtney and forgiveness don't go together.
15 Secret Diaries Revealed The Children Were Abandoned For Days At A Time
Another shocking revelation from Robert Kardashian's diaries is that Kris was a neglectful mother and she left the children for days at a time. In one diary entry, he allegedly penned before Christmas in 1989 (when all four children were under the age of 11-years-old), he writes,
"She doesn’t leave a number in case of emergency. She doesn’t care! She left (the) kids and all night!”
In another entry, he writes, "Kris couldn’t get her act together" and "I was home alone with 4 kids."
Khloe had already called her mother's excessive drinking out before. On Kocktails With Khloe she revealed, "My mom's (drinking) every night. My mom has a drink every night with dinner. That's her thing, and that's what she loves to do." Kris admitted, "I like to have a glass of wine at 6. What 60-year-old woman wouldn't?
14 Their Grandfather Couldn't Hold His Liquor And Passed Away In A Tragic Car Accident
Kris had a very tragic childhood and it's not something that many people know about, as she would rather bury the past. Starmagazine reported that her father, Robert "Bob" Houghton, was an aspiring entrepreneur but his troubles with alcohol destroyed those plans. He died behind the wheel in a terrible car crash after he had been downing margaritas at a bar. As a result, Kris has adopted the same business and work ethic as her father.
Bob's ex-girlfriend told Star, "Bob had a lot of charm and was a great salesperson who could sell just about anything to anybody!" She added, "I broke up with him in late 1974 because of his drinking. We were at his parents’ house and he just exploded at them. It was the straw that broke the camel’s back."
13 They Have Nightmares In The Night About Nicole Brown Simpson
During Pam Behan's time as a Kardashian nanny, the family tragically lost their close friend Nicole Brown Simpson who was killed in an unsolved crime. The Kardashians and the Simpsons would often holiday together and had a lot of happy memories. O.J. Simpson was on trial for the crime but he was later acquitted. The Kardashian kids were all still very young and they were troubled by the death.
Behan wrote in her memoir, "All of the kids, but especially Khloe and Robert, were in shock. They were very bothered and kept asking questions."
"They’d wake up in the middle of the night with bad dreams and more questions."
One year later, Kris fell pregnant with Kendall and she now has the middle name Nicole in memory of her mother's late friend.
12 Their Aunt Revealed Kris Wasn't Faithful With Both Rob Kardashian And Bruce Jenner
Kris thought her skeletons were safely locked away in her closet but then her sister, Karen Houghton, outed her to Star magazine as a serial cheater. The estranged sibling confirmed, "Kris has admitted to cheating (on both husbands)." She also predicted that her sister would move on quickly after the divorce from then-Bruce, adding, "Bruce will find someone else. But I guarantee you, Kris will find someone in two days. I promise."
Kris had cheated on Robert with the soccer player, Todd Waterman, and Waterman remembers a young Khloe being in the back seat of the car when they hooked up. He also revealed to Page Six that Kris would take him to private parties and pay the bills with Robert's money. She told her husband that Waterman was her tennis instructor.
11 14-Year-Old Khloe Stole The Family Car And Snuck Out To Meet Her Boyfriend
Khloe was one wild child during her teenage years and she has often confessed to breaking a lot of the family rules when she was growing up.
Khloe was taught how to drive at just 13-years-old, she revealed it was "so if one of our baby sisters (meaning Kendall or Kylie) had an emergency I could drive to the hospital."
Then she used her new skills for something other than an emergency situation.
Aged 14-years-old, she decided to sneak out the house and stole the family car so she could meet her 18-year-old boyfriend. Now, she regrets her decision as she explained on The View, "He was, I think 18, but from 14 to 18, now looking back I think that’s not a normal thing. I feel like I was almost conned, well not conned, but persuaded because he was older and I felt I wouldn’t be accepted or cool or whatever."
10 Their Nannies Were Banned From Talking To The Children About Failure
Kris and Bruce wanted only the best for their family and the super motivated parents would ban their children from hearing stories about failure. Former nanny Pam Behan revealed that she was sharing a story with the young Kardashian children about how she once lost a race when she was part of the high school track team. Bruce then chastised her over the story.
She told the New York Daily News, "I had never been so humiliated and embarrassed in my life! Bruce grimaced and uttered in a pained voice, 'Never ever tell that story again in my house.'"
Even more shocking was when Bruce suggest Pam have "a little taken off" her nose by a plastic surgeon to improve her looks. Despite the tough times on the job, Pam managed to stick with the family for six years.
9 Robert Kardashian DUMPED Kris For Elvis Presley's Wife - Then Went Crawling Back
When Kris first started dating Robert Kardashian, he ditched her because she was "too young" and instead he hooked up with the famous ex-wife of Elvis Presley, Priscilla Presley. According to a close cousin, they told Page Six that Priscilla was only dating Robert because "she had no one else to go out with." Apparently, Robert wanted to turn Priscilla into the "the perfect Armenian housewife" but she told him, "I’m not going to marry anyone until Elvis dies."
When Robert and Priscilla eventually split, he went running back to Kris who was working as a flight attendant and had not much cash to her name.
Finally, Kris had her future husband, and with his money in the bank, she was able to live the luxurious lifestyle she always hoped for.
8 It Is Speculated That O.J. Simpson Is Khloe's Real Father
One of the biggest conspiracies that haunt the Kardashian family is that Robert Kardashian isn't Khloe's biological father. Instead, it's widely speculated that her real father is O.J. Simpson. The rumors had first started when fans pointed out that Khloe looks remarkably "different" than the rest of her sisters.
Additionally, Rob's ex-wife, Ellen Kardashian, came forward in 2013 and revealed that Robert had told her he was not Khloe's father.
Khloe ranted on Kocktails With Khloe, "I think the thing that most became overwhelming was when, like, the stuff happened with one of my dad’s wives. She wanted to come out, like, 10 years later after my dad passed away and said that I’m not his daughter and that he confided in her and blah-blah. I was like, ‘Listen, you can talk about me and my sisters all you want. Do not talk about my dad. He’s not here!'"
7 Robert Kardashian "Knew O.J. Was Guilty"
Caitlyn Jenner's memoir Secrets of My Lifehad many shocking, page-turning reveals but one that stuck out was that she claimed Robert Kardashian "knew" O.J. Simpson was guilty. Robert defended O.J. during his trial and the pair had been close friends for decades before the death of Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ronald Goldman. Nobody was ever convicted of the crime.
Caitlyn revealed that Robert told her, "'I would’ve been okay with it if they had gotten him in the first trial.'"
She added, "The implication was obvious: that he believed OJ was guilty." She also admitted to "abandoning" her other children once she stepped into the Kardashian world as then-Bruce Jenner. "If God refuses to make peace with me. This will be the primary reason," she writes.
6 Rob's Nanny Believes He Suffered From Compulsion As A Child
Pam Behan worked as the nanny for the Kardashian family for six years so she knew almost everything there was to know about the children. Although they were all individual and different from each other, she noticed something about Rob Kardashian Jr. that she believed was "compulsion." She told Celebs Now, "Rob was a good kid. He was almost too good, so you’d be worried about him. He’d come home from school, sit down and do his homework, put his stuff away, go into his room and pick out his clothes for the next day. He was so organized. Then after that, he’d play." She added, "It”s almost like it’s compulsive behavior."
Talking about the other siblings, she revealed, "Khloé and I spent a lot of time together. She’s a feisty one but I like her honesty. Kim spent the most time in front of the mirror. Her looks were very important to her, even back then. She was actually a pretty sweet girl. Kourtney always seemed like the most responsible. She was a little standoffish for a long time."
5 Kris Became "Bored" With Raising The Children
Kris was 24-years-old when she gave birth to Kourtney, and a year later along came Kim. She moved with Robert and her two newborn daughters to a new family home in Beverly Hills that boasted "a prestigious section, complete with tennis courts and a duck-shaped swimming pool." It was the ideal life she had always dreamed of - but it was not enough and she soon became "bored" with her new role as a mother.
Robert's childhood friend, Joni Migdal, told Page Six, "(Kris had become) bored and rebellious." Adding, "Kris would tell Robert, 'I need to go out. I need to have fun.' (She) was coming home at 2 and 3 in the morning drunk, and she would tell Robert, 'I have kids and I have not lived life.'" Kris got her partying out of her system and then had two more children, Khloe and Robert Jr, later on.
4 Robert Kardashian Tried To Turn Kris Into A Stepford Housewife
Kris was just 17-years-old when she first met her future husband. Although she was already dating someone else, her boyfriend was out of town, so Robert made his move. Robert Kardashian's childhood friend also revealed to Page Six that he had plans to turn Kris into a "Stepford Housewife." The high-powered lawyer wanted a cookie-cutter-type of perfect wife to raise his family, and Kris was his pick. Migdal said, "(It) was the model for Robert’s marriage to Kris."
Kris also forced made to listen to audiotapes about how to become the perfect wife.
Another close family friend, Larry Kraines, said, "Kris would say, 'Oh God, I have to finish these tapes before the week is out because we’re going to talk about them.'"
3 American Crime Story Revealed A Rare Fact About O.J. Simpson And Kim
During the trial of The People vs O.J. Simpson, there was so much pressure on O.J. that he almost couldn't see a way out. American Crime Story was a docu-drama all about the trial and they revealed in the episode "From the Ashes of Tragedy" that he almost tried to end it all in Kim's childhood bedroom. It turns out that this was actually true and had happened.
In the book American Tragedy: The Uncensored Story of the Simpson Defense by Lawrence Schiller and James Willwerth, it was revealed that Robert Kardashian convinced O.J. that this was not the way to go. He said, "I could never walk in this room, my daughter couldn’t sleep in this bed. She’d know what happened." The writers told Vanity Fair, "Robert was there simply because he’s a loyal friend, he really had nothing else to gain."
2 Kris' Mother Pushed Her Daughter Towards Rich Men
Kris was told by her mother, Mary-Jo Campbell, that was important for her to settle down with a man who could look after her financially. Kris was born Kirsten Houghton in 1955, she was raised in San Diego by her mother after her father left the family when she was just 7-years-old. After high school, she had no other plans but to start looking for a future husband.
High school friend, Joan Zimmerman told Page Six she thought that Kris' mother was pushing her towards rich men.
Kris was dating a professional golfer, Cesar Sanudo, but when Robert Kardashian came along she moved on with him.
Zimmerman said, "(Kris) saw a far better financial opportunity with Kardashian than with Cesar." Their former family pastor, Kenn Gulliksen, also revealed, "I just sensed that Kris saw in Bob a kind of gold mine. Robert was a very generous man, and that was... good for Kris."
1 Is Robert Kardashian's Will Fake?
When his ex-wife, Ellen Kardashian, made Robert Kardashian’s private diaries public, the family became suspicious and Kourtney had her late father's handwriting analyzed to confirm his will was legit. Her father had left some belongings to Ellen but after she profited from releasing the diaries, Kourtney believed Ellen was just out to grab his money.
In 2012, Ellen told Radar Online, "According to the calls I received from the attorney, Kourtney felt like she wanted to have her father’s handwriting analyzed to make sure that he actually had written those things down that he left me." She added, "And she did. Kourtney actually had his handwriting analyzed. But every time she called the attorney about something, he would call me to let me know. It was never-ending. There were many things, many things about the will."
The saga over Robert's will is still pending but, hopefully, the family will have the answers very soon.
