Prince William’s and Prince Harry’s love for their late mother has never been questioned. In fact, they’ve been honoring her legacy and keeping her memory alive for years now. And that level of undying love, of course, went both ways.

Before her passing, Princess Diana never shied away from publicly adoring her boys, showering them with love and attention every chance she got. So, it’s no surprise she had some sweet advice to offer  in the way of one of life’s greatest moments: finding love.
Prince William found the love of his life in college

Prince William and Kate Middleton

Prince William and Kate Middleton first started dating back in 2004. After they met at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, it’s been the ultimate love story every since — save a brief split in 2007, but we don’t need to talk about that. After all, William and Kate are the perfect pair.

“When I first met Kate I knew there was something very special about her,” William told reporters after they got engaged. And then, in 2011, they got married — and the world rejoiced. Since then, the two have welcomed three (ridiculously adorable) children into the world.

Prince William included Princess Diana along the way

It’s a well-known fact that most men seek their mother’s approval when it comes to choosing a wife. That said, it was important to Prince William that he included his late mother in the process. For starters, he proposed to Kate with Diana’s sapphire and diamond engagement ring. And that’s not all.

“Like Diana, Kate had a small blue bow sewn into her wedding dress for good luck, and antique lace repurposed in the design as her ‘something old,'” Vanity Fair reports. Furthermore, the bride and groom chose the same hymn for their wedding as the final song at Diana’s funeral.

Prince Harry found the love of his life in 2016

Without a doubt, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have had a whirlwind romance. After being introduced in 2016, the two went public with their relationship. Shortly after that, they announced their engagement in November, 2017, and were married on May 19, 2018.

“I was beautifully surprised when I walked into that room and saw her as she was sitting there,” Prince Harry said of meeting Markle for the first time. “I was like ‘OK well I’m really going to have to up my game.'” Turns out, he did just fine for himself.

Prince Harry also included Princess Diana in his love story

With the most recent royal wedding fresh in our minds, it’s easy to recall all the ways Prince Harry included his late mother along the way. Much like his older brother, Harry popped the question in sentimental fashion. The prince had designed the ring himself, using two of Diana’s diamonds. His goal? To ensure Diana was with them on the journey.

Furthermore, both William and Harry were sure to include their Spencer relatives — Diana’s side of the family — in their wedding ceremonies and receptions — a gesture Diana would have greatly appreciated, no doubt.

Diana told her sons to ‘look after’ the ones they’d love

When Prince Charles chose to publicly discuss his extramarital affair (more on that in a minute), it sent the royal family on a roller coaster ride of emotions. And when Princess Diana was asked how she handled the situation with her children, she told the BBC

I went to the school and put it to William, particularly, that if you find someone you love in life you must hang on to it and look after it, and if you were lucky enough to find someone who loved you then one must protect it.

For the record, the young princes were 13 and 11, respectively, at the time. And clearly, they’ve taken her words of wisdom to heart, as they’ve both found true love.

The advice was in response to Charles’ going public with his affair

In 1994, Prince Charles went public with his affair. More specifically, he spoke about his relationship with his now-wife Camilla Parker Bowles in a documentary series. Presented by Jonathan Dimbleby, the series was titled Charles: The Private Man, The Public Face, and it caught Princess Diana totally off-guard.

In the 1995 interview with the BBC, Diana said she’d had no idea Charles would disclose his affair to Dimbleby. Her first concern, of course, were her children. And she wanted to protect them, hence her thoughtful words of advice.

Both princes are confident their mother would have loved their wives

Naturally, Prince William and Prince Harry alike wish their mother could have met their wives. Sadly, they never had the pleasure. It is, however, clear to see the People’s Princess would get along with both Middleton and Markle. In fact, Harry said Markle and his mother would have been “thick as thieves,” and that Diana would be “over the moon” and “best friends with Meghan.”

As for Middleton? Well, there’s absolutely no question Diana would have loved her, too. Because really, who wouldn’t? During Prince Harry’s best man speech at his brother’s wedding, he turned to William and said, “Our mother would be so very proud of you.”

And now, we’re all crying.
