Egypt and Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has been named EA SPORTS Premier League Player of the Season. The award which was announced on the Premier League’s official website on Sunday means Salah becomes the first African to achieve the feat.
The Premier League Player of the Season is an annual award presented to players in England, which recognises the most outstanding player in the Premier League each season.
Salah topped a shortlist including Manchester City duo Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling , David De Gea of Manchester United , Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley’s James Tarkowski .
He won the award by receiving the most combined votes from a panel of experts, Premier League captains and fans via a public vote.
It has been a remarkable season for Salah following a return to the Premier League after a forgettable first spell with Chelsea in the 2013/2014 campaign.
His 31 goals make him the joint-highest scorer in a 38-match season, a record he can hold outright if he scores against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.
The Egyptian also became the first African to breach the 30-goal mark in a single campaign, and the only man to win three EA SPORTS Player of the Month awards in the same season.
Speaking on his latest award, Salah said: “I am very happy, I am very proud to win it.
“They say I didn’t have success here the first time, so it was always in my mind to have success here in the Premier League.”
His EA SPORTS award adds to the individual honours Salah won from the Professional Football Association (PFA) and the Football Writers Association this season.
He was also named 2017 CAF and BBC African Footballer of the Year.
