Lisa Bonet and Jason Momoa go together perfectly. He's the peanut butter to her jelly – or, the Khal Drogo to her Daenerys Targaryen, minus Drogo's tragic ending on Game of Thrones, of course. They've been blissfully joined at the hip after meeting through mutual friends in 2004, and this gorgeous Hollywood couple has been snagging gossip headlines ever since: Are they or aren't they married? Is Bonet having an affair with her ex-husband, rocker Lenny Kravitz? These are just a few of the questions that have shrouded the couple's relationship, but they'll be the first to admit their romance is even wackier than many suspected.
The weirdness goes much deeper than their obvious height difference — Momoa stands 6 feet 4 inches tall and his wife tops off at just 5 feet 2 inches, and the fact that she's about 12 years older than him is no biggie either. It's the secrecy surrounding their nuptials and their unconventional and unorthodox lifestyle that really raises eyebrows. Here are some of the strange facts surrounding Lisa Bonet and Jason Momoa's relationship.
1. He was a creepy stalker
Those who grew up watching The Cosby Show remember Lisa Bonet as the eccentric and free-spirited character Denise Huxtable. With her wild and untamed hair and unique sense of style, Denise became a fan favorite. Her future husband was also one of the many viewers who fell in love with her on the small screen.
The former Game of Thrones star appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden and said he had his eye on Bonet since he was 8 years old. "I saw her on the TV and I was like, 'Mommy, I want that one,'" he told the host. "I was like, 'I'm going to stalk you for the rest of my life, and I'm going to get you.' I'm a full-fledged stalker." Creepy much?
Momoa kept his stalker status to himself, saying it would have been too "creepy and weird" if he had exposed his obsession to her at the start of their relationship. (Good call, Jason.) He finally came clean after they had their second child. The fact that their relationship has lasted longer than most Hollywood romances seems proof enough that Bonet finds his creepiness endearing.
2. They were super secretive about their marriage
Momoa has frequently referred to Bonet as his "wife" in various interviews, which led many to believe the couple walked down the aisle sometime in 2007, but when a source claimed the couple did wed until November 2017, we felt duped. The big day supposedly went down at their home in Topanga, Calif., with a source telling Us Weekly: "Apparently they weren't officially married until then! They said they 'made it official.'"
Following their wedding, Momoa told Entertainment Tonight he was ecstatic to be hitched to his "dream woman," but he was really ticked off that the news was leaked to the press, calling the snitch an "a**hole" and warning the culprit: "I will find you."
As far as why they pretended to be married for so long, it appears that they considered themselves committed without going through the hassle of legalizing their union. He called their actual wedding nothing more than a "gathering of our families and celebrating our love."
3. He acted like a 'caveman,' and she was diggin' it
To understand just how strange this relationship is, we have to look back to its very beginning in 2004. Bonet and her friends hit up a jazz club in Los Angeles, and Momoa was there with his buddies. He told TV host James Corden it was like "fireworks" when she first introduced herself, and he convinced her to give him a ride back to the hotel where he was staying. They stopped at a café, and Momoa ate a bowl of grits while Bonet ordered a Guinness, which just so happens to be his favorite beer of all time.
Bonet recalled that scene for Porter magazine: "In that moment, love came and it came big, and he did not run as I think a lot of men do," she said. "He basically picked me up and threw me over his shoulder, caveman style!"
And now we're aching for these two to star in a remake of Tarzan just to hear him say: "Me Momoa, you Bonet!"
4. They're in the stone age
Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet are nonconformists who shun the modern electronics that most of us can't live without. In a 2014 interview with Essence magazine, Bonet admitted that she had never even been on the social media platform Facebook, saying: "It's just not on my radar."
The couple and their two children are also "television-free," and she tries her best to remain as "media-free" as possible. However, she and Momoa are huge fans of Saturday Night Live and like to curl up together with a bowl of popcorn and watch the weekly episodes on their computer. So why is a flat screen TV absent from the Momoa-Bonet household? Well, Bonet believes that keeping her children from being glued to the tube helps to "cultivate" their imaginations.
It almost seems sacrilegious that two stars who make a living by appearing on the small and big screens don't even own a television.
5. Mind. Blown
She still hangs out with her ex, and it's NBD
The media thrives on messy celebrity divorces, as well as baby daddy and baby mama drama, but you won't find any of that nonsense festering around these two. In an interview with Porter magazine, Bonet revealed that she still has a tight bond with her ex-husband, rocker Lenny Kravitz, who's also the father of her eldest daughter, Zoë Kravitz. They even break bread and celebrate Thanksgiving together.
"It's fantastic. It's full-on family love," Bonet said. She's even ditched Momoa a few times to show up on the red carpet alongside Lenny, like the time she accompanied the rocker and their daughter to the 2015 Met Gala.
While speaking to Oprah's Master Class, Lenny said, "Zoë's mom and I now are best friends. When we're all together now — [Momoa], her kids, Zoë, me — we're all together and we're one big, happy family. It's beautiful and it just shows you what can be done."
Zoë even detailed how their intertwined family dynamics "makes things so easy" while speaking with Ocean Drive magazine. "My dad and [Momoa] get along really well … As long as everyone can be in the same room together, and have love for each other, it's totally healthy."
It's refreshing to see a blended family get along swimmingly, but perhaps Bonet should chill out on the date nights with Lenny, no?
6. They got 'drunk' tattoos
Momoa sports some pretty impressive ink all over his perfectly chiseled body, and the Justice League star even shares a matching tattoo with Bonet and her daughter, Zoë, according to Hollywood.com. The ink reads, "Etre toujours ivre" on their forearms, and according to Essence magazine, that translates from French to "be always drunk." Um, okay. Bottoms up and all that jazz.
Momoa and Zoë aren't photographed together often, so we're glad to hear they have an amazing bond that includes some permanent ink. However, we're puzzled over the meaning. We guess they can always claim the verbiage means to be "drunk in love" as a nod to Beyoncé's chart-topping song, or perhaps Momoa's love for Guinness was the catalyst behind their matching body art. The script is likely a line from French poet Charles Baudelaire's "Be Drunk," which includes the lines: "You have to be always drunk. That's all there is to it — it's the only way. So as not to feel the horrible burden of time that breaks your back and bends you to the earth, you have to be continually drunk. But on what? Wine, poetry or virtue, as you wish. But be drunk…"
To make this whole tattoo situation even more interesting, another unidentified man who's chummy with the Aquaman star has the exact same words tattooed on his forearm, as well. Welcome to Hollyweird, my friends.
7. He's a 'dips**t,' but she doesn't mind
With such a huge age difference between the two of them, we wouldn't be surprised if Momoa was less than mature during the early years of their relationship. The beefy actor even seemed a bit surprised that Bonet stood by his side during the initial stages of their courtship. In an interview with The Huffington Post, the Road to Paloma star admitted: "She's so amazing because I'm such a dips**t."
Now, we don't have the specifics on all of Momoa's screw ups during their relationship, but perhaps he's referring to that time he stuck his foot in his mouth and bragged about being able to "rape beautiful women" during his stint as Drogo on Game of Thrones. Yeah, we can imagine he was in the dog house for many weeks following that comment.
But in the end, it appears that Momoa can do no wrong in Bonet's eyes. "She's an angel. She's amazing. God bless her. She's seeing this one through. I've done a lot of dumb things in my life," he said.
